mock negotiation: candidate
You are a candidate for a role as an entry level marketing rep at Tech Superstars Startup. You are about to have your final conversation with the recruiter and you’re pretty sure they’re going to make you an offer. You’re really excited about joining the team. There are four issues at stake. Your priorities, in order of importance, are:
Salary: This is your first full time job out of college. You’re hoping to start off strong at around $60,000, but since you’re right out of school you’re not sure exactly what to expect.
Start Date: Since you took a few months off to travel after graduating, you’re looking to start earning ASAP.
Location: While you’re currently based in Boston, which you love, you’d really like to move to San Francisco, which is the heart of the tech scene. You’ve heard there’s an office in Boulder and you do love skiing, but you don’t know anyone out there so it doesn’t seem like your best move. Staying in Boston is also fine and does seem like the easiest option.
Bonus: If a signing bonus is an option, that would be great. Extra cash couldn’t come at a better time since you’re still paying off your student loans, and you’ve been spending with no income for a few months. Honestly, even $5,000 would take a load off your mind.
