mock negotiation: recruiter
You are a recruiter working for Tech Superstars Startup. You are ready to make an offer to a candidate for an entry level marketing rep role that brings in fresh training straight out of school, and you’d like to bring this person on board. There are four issues at stake. Your priorities, in order of importance, are:
Start Date: TSS is staffing up on marketing ASAP because the recent influx of funding means higher expectations from investors.
Location: There’s an established office in Boulder, and the company is ramping up a satellite office here in Boston around the sales team. TSS is looking to develop a marketing presence here as well. Though the headquarters are in SF, the additional relocation costs seem unnecessary at this point.
Salary: TSS just closed a round of Series B funding, but the company isn’t exactly rolling in it yet, so you’re trying to manage expenses — and a high starting salary only raises expectations for everyone. The position is budgeted between $50-$60,000, but you’re aiming for low to middle of the range unless the person is seriously fantastic.
Bonus: You have some flexibility to be generous with the bonus if it means it’s going to get you a great hire. You can offer a signing bonus of anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000.
