From career expert Alexandra Dickinson comes a highly anticipated new offering for expectant mothers: a step-by-step workshop to prepare for postpartum mental health challenges.
Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders, or PMADs, is the all-encompassing term for the mental health disorders women may face during pregnancy and up to one year after giving birth. Postpartum depression (PPD) and anxiety are among the most common complications of childbirth, affecting up to 20% of new moms. But many more women who are suffering go undiagnosed, not seeking help due to guilt, shame, or social stigma. Still worse, women of color experience PMADs at twice the rate of white women, and 60% of these women do not receive any treatment or support services.
The Preparing for Postpartum Mental Health Challenges curriculum takes on the many common and confusing questions that pregnant women grapple with, including:
What’s the difference between baby blues and postpartum depression?
What is my likelihood of having PPD, and is there anything I can do to prevent it?
Do I need a therapist, and if so, how do I find one? Will my insurance cover it?
The workshop is presented in Dickinson’s signature style of actionable knowledge, conversation-starting scripts for tough conversations, and packed full of answers to your burning questions and resources for follow up.
Dickinson, known for her work as a speaker and coach specializing in negotiation, has taken on the challenge of earning a second Master’s degree in Social Work, all while raising her two young daughters and maintaining her coaching business. Now she combines her deep knowledge of sensitively approaching challenging topics with a thoroughly-researched, inclusive approach to a challenge that deserves far more attention than it gets: postpartum mental health.
